The Big Picture
Kwan Fong Gallery of Fine Art and Culture at CLU
Exhibit runs from 6th October – 26th November
This is a rare opportunity to see extraordinary master drawings by one of California’s finest draftsmen. Alexey Steele is famous for his work as a painter and as an outspoken advocate for the role of fine art in the cultural life of modern society. This body of work is a selection of huge drawings made for two of his unique dome mural commissions, The Circle and The Soul of the Hero. Known as “cartoons”, drawings like these are made to help a painter work out problems of composition and form before committing to the actual painting. Seeing these remarkable renderings in the gallery will allow a glimpse into the working methods of a master artist in the process of making a magnificent piece of figurative art. In 2009 the paintings won Alexey the prestigious Artemis Award in Athens, Greece “for celebrating the power and beauty of women through his art on a heroic scale in the modern world”.
Alexey is a Signature Artist Member of the California Art Club and Founder of the Classical Underground, a unique performance platform showcasing the relationship between classical music and classical representational art. His work has been the subject of numerous art and music publications including two covers of “American Artist”, “Southwest Art”, “Fine Art Connoisseur”, “Gramophone” and an in-depth profile in the Los Angeles Times.
Conference guests will have a unique opportunity to visit the gallery with Steele, hearing about the creation of this extraordinary suite of work, his methods and philosophy.
